Josh Barichello is a kuskāni (white person) who grew up in the territories of the Kaska Dena, Shùhta Dene, and Kwanlin Dün. Josh works with the Ross River Dena Council Lands Department. He also coordinates land-based education programs in Kaska Dena territory with Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning.

    “We have our footsteps everywhere”

    In 2018 the Kaska Dena created their own hunting permit system, to protect their land and the animals that share it. In doing so, they amplified a complex dispute between the Kaska and settler governments about who has authority over the land.
