UNDERESTIMATING THE GREEN POWER OF STEPHANE DION

“Collectively, humans are motivated to overcome the forces of social inertia only by hope for a dramatic improvement in their situation, or a personified enemy (or both). The collapse threat presents us with neither of these factors. Aging, dwindling, middle-class populations in Europe, the US and Japan----shadowed since infancy by the threat of self-imposed annihilation first exemplified by the atomic bomb, and now by a new, ever-expanding menu of commercially viable apocalyptia----cannot be expected to be the vanguard of meaningful social change. We still have too much too lose; we are a generation of bet-hedgers. As we continue to fade into history, those who are more likely to define the course of the late twenty-first century are the other two-thirds of humanity: a global younger generation with nothing to lose and a (more sustainable) world to win.
